Mountain Biking

in

Kaza, Spiti

Nature’s treasures are often guarded rock-solid. An unforgiving climb up a 4590m high Kunzum pass makes you worthy of one such jewel on earth.

Spiti is a cold-desert valley enclosed within towering himalayas, in the state of Himachal Pradesh. Home to the centuries old Vajrayana Buddhism, Spiti is known for the Ki, Tabo and Dhankar Monasteries. Chandertal, Pin National Park are other highlights of the valley.

How to Reach Kaza, Spiti

Kaza in all its capacity is the capital of the Spiti valley. For those looking for mountaineering, biking and other adventure sports in Spiti can slack off for a day in Kaza. After a tiresome journey on the crumbling himalayan roads and the endless hairpin bends enroute the Spiti valley, Kaza can be a relief to the body's rear.

Kaza, Spiti is accessible from two routes.

How to rent a bike in Kaza, Spiti

A mountain bike (MTB) can be rented from The Himalayan Cafe in the Kaza market ( Ask anyone for the directions as the place is quite popular for the food). I paid a rent of Rs 500/- per day which included a bike helmet as well. I would suggest carrying your own MTB safety gear if you plan to go on extreme biking expeditions in the high himalayas. Make sure the staff double checks the tyres' air pressure, gears and breaks.

On moving further towards Komic, the village of hikkim comes on the right. Before you realise that you have reached Hikkim, you will be flocked by little kids asking for chocolates. Please don’t give in to their demands, as this trend is promoting beggary among the children, when they don’t need to. Hikkim has the highest post office in the world and sending a post card from Hikkim is a must do.

Komic is accredited as the highest village connected by a motorable road. The village has a 500 year old monastery at it’s entrance. From there the village is a descent of about 500m. The monastery also has quarters for the lamas who are quite friendly and are more than happy to tell more about the himalayan village.

In contrast to the secluded, self introspecting bike ride enroute Langza and Komic, Key and Kibber have a bit more action to it. Popular amongst the tourist, this trail allows you to understand the Budhist ethos of the valley.

Unlike komic or langza, kibber is buzzing with activity. A lot of guest houses have come up and more are under construction. Take an adrenaline shot with a Kibber-Chicham ropeway, which is the only means of transportation between these two himalayan villages.

The himalayan adventure can be ramped up further with expeditions to Demul, Dhankar, Pin Valley national park, and even Tabo. The distances should not be taken at their face value as the altitude of all these places is very high, and the lack of oxygen makes the ride quite challenging. The cold winds and unpaved roads adds to the test. Having said that, the experience of riding nestled in the himalayan mountains under a clear blue sky, is enthralling.
